An honest look at family finances

Did you know you can buy insurance against getting a traffic ticket? Crazy huh?
On the news the other night they profiled a company called Trafficare. For a monthly fee, this company will pay any ticket you get for a moving violation, PLUS any increase in your insurance due to said ticket. I couldn’t find a price on their website but on the news they said it costs $12.95 per month, with the average speeding ticket in AZ being $180. The company said on the news that 80% of their customers don’t get tickets. So that is where their profit is coming from.
So basically, if you get one ticket a year you basically break even, depending on your insurance bill increase. Hopefully, you aren’t getting an average of one ticket per year. Cause that’s a lot! Seriously, slow down! You will save more than money.
You would have to pretty darn irresponsible to need this service. You either need to be getting multiple tickets per year, or unable to just put the 13 bucks a month aside yourself. But there are people out there who fit in this category. I know a few.
More than just the finances of it, is the moral question. Should you be able to buy insurance so that you can then avoid punishment for illegal acts? I mean, think about it. You buy this insurance and then you no longer have to worry about traffic tickets. You can just drive however you like. It doesn’t seem right.
I guess at some point they would take your license away.

Wow, I’d never heard of it either. I agree it seems unethical, usually the cost of the ticket and increased insurance rates serve as deterrents. I guess if there is a market, someone will discover and exploit it.
Interesting concept. Curious who buys that. If people don’t get tickets in the first place, what’s the point of signing up? Even if you do get a ticket it would be less money. Not a bad idea curious to learn more about it.
Wow, that’s crazy! Very interesting. I got a ticket once and cried so hard!! The only thing I was worried about was my insurance going up. haha!

This is the same thing millions of people pay attorney to do for them all the time. It’s not unethical, it’s smart!
If you’ve never broken down on the side of the road… why get AAA?
Don’t get sick often… why get medical insurance?
Furthermore, to call someone irresponsible because they like the idea of or want this service is irresponsible closed minded on your part. A service like this can save $$$ for citys and regualr folks who cant afford to pay $300 or more after court and attorney fees are tacked on. And in this economy.. Save the $12/ month… yeah right! I think it’s a great idea and I wish I had though of it!
I have looked at the website and done my research on it. Maybe you should do the same.
I read this blog everyday and I cannot believe this comment above mine. Maybe Caral should use some common sense to go with her research. You buy AAA or health insurance because you can’t control when you break down or get sick. If you don’t want a ticket how about you obey the posted and known traffic laws? Why are there court and attorney fees if you just pay your ticket? If you slow down to the speed limit you would save even more money with fuel economy. I have no idea how this scam would save cities (citys) $$$, and regular (regualr) folks are not going to buy this, it will be irresponsible fools who don’t want to have consequences for their actions and want the rest of us to pick up the slack and look out for them.
LL, do more research before you label this as a “scam”. Where is your proof that it is a scam? I think that you are mad because you did not think of the idea…lol.
D mack: I never said it was a scam.
Ashley: Are you LL? If you are, read your post
No, Sorry, I didn’t see that your comment was directed to LL.
You should live in Ohio. My son got pulled over last night and check for Guns?!? When none found, got a ticket for speeding. He was behind a semi, not possible to speed. Asked to see laser, told they didn’t have to show it and didn’t have it locked any more. Our town gives tickets for going over yellow line (try to prove you didn’t ) ,not using turn signal, and not waiting 3 minutes before moving through a stop sign. Depends on your situation. Great idea and not “irresponsible.
This is a great idea. I did some research oin the company and I found this out:
1. They do put parameters around the service, they don’t cover reckless tickets, parking tickets, insurance tickets, and no drivers license tickets.
2. They have a 12% “claim” ratio meaning 88% of their members don’t get tickets. Which proves that “RESPONSIBLE” people sign up for the service.
3. The President/CEO is an ex cop and has seen first hand the city deficits around the nation because people don’t pay their tickets. This program DOES help in that regard.
4. I just signed up and have never gotten a ticket. EAT THAT!
5. It’s sad that because the President of this company is African American, we have to bash it. I’m white btw.
