An honest look at family finances
11 Dec
It’s been a few years since I worked in credit card customer service. Most of the customers have faded from memory, but a couple still stand out.
There was the guy who argued with me forever saying we couldn’t charge him interest and a late fee. He thought it was one or the other. Um… no.
Then there was this lady who called because her two credit card accounts were receiving the default rate of Prime+19.99. She didn’t understand why. I explained it was because both credit cards had been overlimit for the past few months. She told me she had kept them overlimit on purpose because she was getting divorced and wanted to appear poor so that she would get more in the settlement. I don’t know if it worked or not, but she sure was upset about it. She kept repeating, “But I did that on purpose!”
Oh, my favorite excuse for paying late. This guy calls up and asks for his late fee to be removed. He told me he had paid late because his backpack had been stolen… along with the marijuana he was planning to sell to get the money to pay his bill. lol. You have to admire his honesty.
Or the guy who called up in a panic because his payment hadn’t been processed. He needed a cash advance right now, but didn’t have any available credit. I explained there wasn’t anything I could do, he would have to wait until his payment went through. He then put a pimp (no joke) on the phone so that I could explain it to him. The pimp told me that he would stay with the guy until he could get the cash. lol. I bet that was an uncomfortable 24 hours.
I once saw one account that had like a $350,000 limit. The computer will allow you to go over limit a certain amount before shutting of your card. This account could go over $100,000 before being cut off. I was stunned! I’ve never seen anything like it.
One call I got was a panicked mother saying she needed an emergency cash advance because she was out of town and her son had been kidnapped. She needed to get home asap! I freaked! I immediately got someone on the phone with us to give the credit limit increase. They dont’ just hand out emergency credit limit increases so there is a series of things to check before they can give them. Well, come to find out “out of town” meant gambling in Vegas and she has used this excuse before to get more money to feed her gambling problem. Needless to say she didn’t get the increase. The depths people will go to. (I accidently wrote “debts people will go to”. lol.. that too!)

Wow, I don’t know whether to laugh at the absurdity or cry that there are actually people out there like this!
Thanks for the laugh, I needed it. I’m so glad I’ve never worked customer service, I don’t think I have the patience.
Wow… And I thought I had some weird customer stories. I know a girl who used to work CR for a major credit card company. She said that threats of physical harm was a daily thing. Working CR over the phone must have been so draining.
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
thanks for sharing
