It’s hard to choose just one favorite Christmas memory.  I don’t really have anything mind blowing.  Just normal Christmas things.

The magic of Santa permeate all my favorite Christmas memories.  I remember the first year that I really believed.  I must have been about 4.  I woke up in the morning and the cookies were gone, the presents were there, and the fire place screen had been moved to the side.  I was a believer!  I got Lincoln Logs and Shrinky Dinks that year, I still remember.

Two years later, at the height of my Santa infatuation, I woke up in the middle of the night on Christmas eve.  I heard sleigh bells on the roof.  I swear I did!  Seriously, that moment brings home all the magic of Christmas for me.   I was laying in bed, with my fists full of covers pulled up to my chin, so excited and straining my ears for the slightest hint of Santa.  I got a Cabbage Patch Kid.  Oh, yeah… that’s right!  It was the big hard to find gift that year and my stepfather had won one at work.

Fast forward a few decades and I’m sitting in the backyard roasting marshmallows on Christmas eve with my 4 year old daughter.  Up in the sky, far off in the distance, with red and green lights we saw what we still believe was Santa’s sleigh.  It was magical for her.  She still talks about it.

Two years ago my husband really went all out making it look like Santa had been here.  We hadn’t landscaped the backyard yet so it was a just a dirt lot.  We made tracks like a sleigh had landed along with hoof prints in the dirt and big foot prints where Santa had walked.  The reindeer had eaten the carrots we left for them and there were carrot bits strewn about.  It was so fun.  My daughter went nuts over it.

Of course opening the present is a big deal.  I’m not going to pretend that I’m not interested in the Christmas presents.  I am!  But really when you look back it isn’t the gifts but the magic of it all that makes it special.

What is your favorite Christmas memory?
